"Rated Next"
The band Next is best known for a huge #1 hit in 1997, "Too Close." It would remain at #1
for five weeks, and became the most popular song of 1997, according to Billboard Magazine. The R&B soul
trio consists of R.L. Huggar and brothers Terry "T-Low" and Raphael "Tweety" Brown. Comparing to the likes
of another well-known trio from the 1990s, Boyz II Men, their debut release, Rated Next showcases
the soulfulness of love ballad songs. This particular style was becoming the standard for the late 1990s,
with other artists like Boyz II Men, and (from the female side), Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.
Their musical style would launch other popular artists of the 2000 decade, the most popular, being Usher.
Songs such as "Too Close," "Penetration, "Represent Me" have a more upbeat fashion, than most
of the other love ballads. "Next Experience" has more of the typical Rap style and upbeat R&B.
Another song in the Rap mode is the last track, "Rock On." "Do You Think Of Me" has the
typical R&B groove, likewise "Sexitude," "Taste So Good" and "Phone Sex" (suggestive titles
normally have the typical "sexy groove."
The love ballads here are the standouts for the romantic mood, and the #1 "Too Close"; You
can't help but groove along with its beat. The other upbeat numbers defines the true sound of today's
R&B, which continued from the 1990s on. Fans of Usher and Boyz II Men will enjoy Rated Next.
Next is still together these days. Only one member has been replaced, Raphael "Tweety" Brown, in 2007.
Due to differences between him and R.L. Huggar, he was replaced by another singer, by the name of Deponce.
Overall, they've released 4 albums. Their latest was released in 2009, Next, Lies & Videotape.
